As I have been teaching three/two classes per semester over the last few years, it has become quite unrealistic to upload here all my evaluations for each and every class. I chose instead to upload all the evaluations of a selection of classes that I have both taught and created (syllabus, calendar, assignments, etc). Except for the "French Language, Literatures and Cultures" taught at Wellesley in the Fall of '13, the "Practice in Communication" class taught at Gettysburg, and all the language classes taught at Brown, everything uploaded here consists of classes that I have designed entirely. This page is still in construction (Clemson's evaluations cannot be fully downloaded into Pdfs, and combining the numerical files+student comments takes a bit of time)

FREN 207 Childhood in French and Francophone Cultures, XXth and XXIst Centuries (Bryn Mawr College, Spring 2013; taught in French. Syllabus available here).
What follows is the complete set of evaluations from the introduction to 20th and 21st-century French and Francophone literature course that I taught at Bryn Mawr College in the Spring of 2013. This course is theme-oriented, and I chose to teach the class around the notion of childhood. See teaching experience and syllabus for more information on the content of the course.

What follows is data about the classes that I have taught at Gettysburg College in the Fall of 2011 and over the past three years at Brown, from the French beginners classes (FREN100 and 200) to advanced language classes such as Writing and Speaking French II (FREN600) or the French National Heroes class (FREN1510). A complete set of the evaluations for all of these classes is available here on a pdf format (right column) as well as upon request at the Gettysburg College French Department ([email protected]) and at the Brown Department of French Studies ([email protected]). For reasons of space and because this page is becoming quite long, I have only provided thumbnails from where the evaluations can be downloaded as well as a selection of students' comments.
FREN 103, Elementary French. Gettysburg College, Fall 2011
Selected students’ comments Everyone participated and had fun. I already knew a good amount of french but she fine tuned everything. I learned french and had fun at the same time. The website was great, two thumbs up. She got everyone active in class. She's personable and fun while teaching and makes sure we all do our best. I was awful at french in high school and middle school but Pauline was an awesome teacher and helped me understand. Pauline was incredibly helpful. Her comments on each assignment often allowed me to figure it out what I had previously gotten wrong and allowed me to fix my mistakes. I have never really cared for learning another language but I feel as though I have learned a lot in this class. Pauline was very helpful and the class was really fun. She made this class as entertaining as she could and was always enthusiastic. She always looked over our homework and made herself available to help us |

FREN 202, Intermediate French. Gettysburg College, Fall 2011
Selected students’ comments Class wasn't always the same. There was a big variety in the different exercises we did, some of which were very interesting like the debates. She was very helpful, her thorough corrections of my writing made me better as a writer. great class atmosphere. She had a lot of different activities that made the whole class participate. She was good at being fair and real in her comments+grading. I was not expecting to enjoy this class but it ended up being my favorite because of Pauline. She was very helpful and I could understand her. Best use of Moodle out of all my professors. Very efficient and didn't let the class become boring. Very good at testing knowledge of course materials. She had many comments on all assignments returned. She was extremely easy to work with and to get in touch with when help was needed. This is the best french class I've ever taken. I feel as though I learned a lot more in this semester from Pauline than in years of taking french. Pauline helped me individually every week because I really struggle in French. She was so helpful and patient with me. She made me really like french (and I used to hate it). Using many different forms of teaching was very helpful (i.e: videos and articles). She always had every minute planned so we never wasted any time. |

FREN 300, Practice in Communication (French Through Cinema). Gettysburg College, Fall 2011.
Selected students’ comments I improved my writing and oral skills a bunch. On topic, enthusiastic, very helpful. Great feedback for all work. Really loves her work, great professor. Loved this class-- a great language course! She made sure we always had handouts to help explain concepts as well as grammatical guidelines and references that we could use and we tried to fix it ourselves. She did not waste a second. The skills we learned in communication through speaking, writing, and watching movies were excellent. She always kept our minds active and thinking. |

French Heroes and Mythologies. Brown University, Spring 2010 (see Syllabus and Departmental evaluations)
I have calculated these average numbers out of the ratings of the 17 students of the class. 1= Excellent, 2=Very good, 3=good, 4= Fair, 5=poor. Ratings of the overall quality of the teaching 1.08 Ratings of the overall quality of the course 1.3 Materials were interesting and well suited to the level of the course 1.3 The instructor’s comments were clear and helpful 1.1 Selected students' comments She was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She encouraged us to pick upon subtleties rather than the obvious answers. Her teaching is the best I have ever seen. Pauline was very enthusiastic about the course, which made it very enjoyable to take. Her teaching was clear, and her comments on paper were very helpful. I feel that overall the work for this course both allowed me to explore a subject area that I never had before, and also really helped my French language abilities. She was very involved. Definitely the best French teacher I have had at Brown. I don’t think that I can stress this too much: she is an incredible teacher. I learned so much and benefited from unbelievable critique and constant intelligent feedback. She is unbelievably dedicated to her job. Unbelievable amounts of critique on returned assignments showed me specifically how to correct my mistakes. It is hard to do justice to what a fantastic instructor Pauline was. I was motivated to succeed and had an unbelievable amount of guidance. I am genuinely grateful to have had the opportunity to take this class and be taught by Pauline. The teacher’s teaching was par excellence. I have learned so much from her not just about the French language but about good teaching. Writing and Speaking French II. Brown University, Fall 2008 (see Departmental evaluations) I have calculated these average numbers out of the ratings of the 18 students of the class. 1= Excellent, 2=Very good, 3=good, 4= Fair, 5=poor. Ratings of the overall quality of the teaching 1.05 The instructor was available and approachable 1 The instructor’s comments on written work were clear and helpful 1.05 The course carried out the stated objectives 1.2 Selected students' comments Pauline is very bubbly and enthusiastic, which really encourages students to speak in class and makes her quite approachable. Pauline was very good at giving constructive criticism and recommendations for further practice based on our assessments. Pauline is always delightfully enthusiastic and conscientious when she teaches. I feel like this injects the class with more energy and discussions are lively and flowing. Also, she makes herself very approachable and I have gone to her office hours a number of times – she has been very helpful. To the point, yet delightfully varied. Always approachable both in and out of the classroom. As always, Pauline was friendly and warm, showing an interest in her students’ academic efforts and general well-being. Pauline was very enthusiastic about teaching, which encouraged students to become more engaged and invest more time and effort in the material and assignments. In my opinion, her instruction or writing and responding to Literature were extremely helpful because they were specific and concrete. She is probably the best French teacher I have ever had, and one of the best teachers at Brown. Big plus: the instructor was very open to new suggestions and followed through on them. Basic French, Semester 2. Brown University, Spring 2008 (See Departmental evaluation) I have calculated these average numbers out of the ratings of the 16 students evaluations. 1= Excellent, 2=Very good, 3=good, 4= Fair, 5=poor. Ratings of the overall quality of the teaching 1.06 Materials were interesting and well suited to the course 1.18 The instructor was available and approachable 1 The course carried out the stated objectives 1.06 Selected students' comments I really enjoyed her creative ways of teaching. It made it so much easier to learn, not to mention enjoyable. She is always encouraging. She has the ability to bring us all together and help each other. Full of energy and great at integrating many parts of the course. She really succeeds at teaching French by exposure and not just by grammatical exercises. Pauline is incroyable! Her style encourages participation and makes class time very enjoyable. La chanson/mot du jour is a great way to start things off in a light-hearted way. The activities are highly interactive and instructive. Basic French, Semester 1. Brown University, Fall 2007 (see Departmental evaluation) I have calculated these average numbers out of the ratings of the 15 students evaluations. 1= Excellent, 2=Very good, 3=good, 4= Fair, 5=poor. Ratings of the overall quality of the teaching 1 Materials were interesting and well-suited to the course 1.1 The instructor was available and approachable 1 The instructor conveyed her interests in the subject 1 The course carried out the stated objectives 1 Selected students' comments She is warm and enthusiastic in class every day and she has new ideas every single lesson to keep French interesting. I see her once a week for extra-lessons and she doesn’t mind at all. She’s inspiring and caring and I cannot – absolutely – think of anything lacking at all. The instructor’s teaching was marvelous. Pauline showed enthusiasm and interest for the class and teaching in general. She was very available and informative. Pauline was incredibly engaging and approachable – in fact the most engaging instructor I had this semester. She was very effective in class – creative with pedagogy, considerate of students with different learning affinities, and knowledgeable about teaching French to beginners. I love how Pauline teaches. She was very good at motivating us and was very attentive. She was always there to help us. |
